Have an idea for a picture? A story? Want to be able to express yourself on paper? It all starts with a sketch. Learn the basics of drawing and illustration and make your ideas come to life! This course will introduce you to basic techniques and drawing practices to help you develop a bold expressive style in your drawing. Attention given to the role of drawing in conceptual development—sketch, thumbnails, learning the best composition—to a final illustration that tells the visual story you want to tell.

Janet Pedersen received her BFA from the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California. She currently teaches on-line foundation drawing classes through Academy of Art University in San Francisco. Her art career as an illustrator and author of children’s books spans 20 years, with a partial client list including: Candlewick Books, Clarion Books, Random House and Penguin Books. She is a member of the 440 Gallery in Brooklyn NY. Her landscapes and figurative paintings are owned nationally and internationally. She has also taught art at the 14th St. Y, a pre-school in New York City. She has won awards such as Finalist for The Artist’s Magazine Annual Art Competition. Category: Landscape in 2018 and 2014. Selected for the Original Art Show by New York Society of Illustrators featuring distinguished children's book illustrators in 2009.

Develop observational skills through blind contour drawing method
Practice drawing considering line, shape, perspective and composition
Learn the difference between representational and expressionistic drawing
Begin to develop a ‘style’ of drawing that communicates what you want to say.

Understand different styles and illustration techniques

Learn the process of finalizing an illustration from sketch to final design.
